Blog #9 Bogost and Cameras

Cameras are everywhere nowadays. It’s easier for us take snapshots of any moment we are encountering considering we have smart phones, iPods and other electronic devices in handy. Back in the day, I remember my mother would bring a small cheap camera to take pictures of me during my school events, then we had to wait for the exciting day to get those developed. Unlike today where we can instantly see what the picture looks like, we couldn’t unless of course you had one of those print out cameras. Even then, it doesn’t compare because digital cameras and smart phones have the tools to delete and retake the picture without wasting photo paper.  I remember being extremely excited and impatient for those pictures to come out.

Picture taking is more common now, I always see people taking “selfless”, taking quick shots for snapchat, or people taking candid photos of their friends. This isn’t just for a special event, I see it at school, work, parties, random events, etc. I don’t ever recall seeing that when I was in middle school. When people took pictures it was mainly for a big event, or somebodies birthday party.

I had never really thought about where the term snapshot came from, Bogost states “The snapshot concept was borrowed from a hunting term for shooting from the hip, but Eastman contextualized the act for the masses.” (10) He also states that the “Kodak moment” encouraged photographers to celebrate moments of life. We never really think about where these terms came from or why we even say them. I think as we get older, technology will get more advanced and make it easier for people to share every second of their life with others. Snapchat is a great example because it’s popular and people can send up to as many snaps as they want to their friends. Out of all the social networks I have, Snapchat is the only social network that makes it more “acceptable” to send as many times as you want. People will take up to 30 snaps a day, whereas Facebook is more of an occasional update. I will believe our future will provide us with more tools like snap chat to quickly share moments with friends. Not only will our future provide us with more tools like snapchat, but I believe eventually we won’t even use cameras considering all these apps are doing the job for us. Snapchat allows you to save the pic right after you take it for instance, and so does instagram.

About my final:

This is my final video! I made the arrangements I thought would make my video better and of course I took everyones feedback as well. I did notice my friend Kelly talked about her culture a lot in the draft video so I planned ahead and I made sure to re-record the second part of the interview to mainly focus on my culture. I added some of her input and we compared and contrasted a bit. I thought I had plenty of pictures so I stayed away from adding more. Instead, I deleted the old interview and changed it up so majority of it was me talking about my culture instead of her talking about hers majority of the time. I also moved the U.S pictures to Kelly talking so it could represent more of the american culture. All the pictures I provided in my video were taken by me and the ones of New York where taken by me as well when I went to New York City last spring break. I made sure to add pictures for every subject I covered. I kept the same transitions because I was content and according to my teammates there didn’t seem to be an issue with them so I decided to not play around with that. Basically the interview was about what I valued about my family which was family, traditions, food, encouragement they’ve always given me and last, I talked about my perspective from the latino culture and what I’ve learned just from being Latina. Comparing it to the american culture would be interesting I thought, considering the fact they are two completely different cultures. I enjoyed making this video because I had the opportunity to share what I usually don’t share with many and it gave me the chance to share my perspective on my own culture as well. This was one of my favorite projects!

Blog

My video is about my culture, what it’s about and how it’s made me who I am today. I thought the idea of interviewing my friend from a different culture would be interesting so I interviewed my friend Kelly Mcaughen and asked her some questions about the American Culture. Most of the video audio is me interviewing Kelly and us discussing what we value and how our cultures have shaped us. Kelly speaks from her own perspective and talks about how she views her own culture. The pictures I have provided in the video were all taken by me. The first half of the video are pictures of my culture such as food, family, Mexico, and everything else I thought would represent the latino culture. The second half is the American culture and those pictures were taken by me as well. I took these pics in April when I went to NY for a school project with a group of students. I posted some pics of NY because I thought the city scene would attract my viewers more and I also posted pictures of me in WSU, parts of the WSU campus and pictures of buildings in NY to represent the American culture. I used some transitions in between by pictures and used some of the tricks I learned from the last tutorial we did such as zooming in and out of the pictures, instead of having them sit still. I like the idea of having text come in so I used that three times in the intro, middle and end. I had to go back a couple times and watch parts of the tutorial to make everything work out. Making this video was honestly so much fun. I enjoyed putting a story together and learning how this application works! Here is my 2 in a half minute video (:

Raw video story (culture)

This is my video on culture. I thought interviewing a friend from a different culture would be a good idea so we could go into detail about our cultures. My friend Kelly Mcaughen is a Junior at Washington State, and is full american. She talks about how the american culture is more dedicated towards striving for success and what she values, whereas I talk about the Mexican culture and how our values, habits and strive is a bit different. For my next video, I think about being more specific for each question I ask her while I’m interviewing her. Topics like education, society, jobs, and parents will be covered! and adding pictures with music included. This is the raw video and the idea I want to use!

Final audio story

This story describes my life from childhood to now. I’m honestly really happy this happened to me, for I would not be who I am today. It has only made me a much stronger person. I cut out the interview with the baby in the background and interviewed my cousin Steven instead. I cut out the errors I had and kept my story the same! hope you enjoy!

Final logo

This is my final logo, I took into consideration what my teammates told me. I added the continents like I said I would and made the blue circle a tad bit darker.  I added the star right next to central america because Mexico is where my roots come from. I left the text the same.

To begin, I used the elipse gradient tool to create my circle and pressed the shift key to make a perfect circle. I darkened the circle by changing the color to a darker blue on the side color tool to the upper right. I than created the continents by using the brush and used a dark green to fill in the continents. I looked up a map online and copied the shapes of the world map onto mine, I was shooting to do similar shapes but I knew it would take me forever to make the exact shapes so I did the best I could. The shapes turned out descent and I was satisfied with the fact that I could tell they were continents. I then used the erase tool to cut off the extra edges hanging out of the world so it wouldn’t look tacky. I resized the star by clicking on it and diminishing it with the tool. I didn’t change the color of the red, because I wanted that same exact dark powerful red I had before. I changed the location right next to Mexico. One of my teammates made that suggestion and I thought it was a great idea so I took his feedback. Last, I used the same text I did from my last rough and used Lithos Pro again to make the text. I kept the same dark red as well. I used the vertical type tool to make it show vertically.

those are the changes I made to my logo!
